Matt Corby has grown from one of the country’s most exciting prospects into one of the nation’s best loved performers. Writing his debut album Telluric was a process of self discovery as he dug deep to find a sound that would satisfy both his soul and his audience. The critically acclaimed album, now certified gold in Australia, has seen him tour the world playing over 95 shows and selling over 100,000 tickets. Matt and the band have also appeared at Splendour in the Grass, Glastonbury, Lowlands and Sasquatch. Matt now returns to the stage in Australia for the first time since last year with his infectious live show and a taste of what’s to come.

Originally hailing from Dingley in Melbourne, Jet quickly conquered the world after forming in 2001, selling more than 6.5 million albums globally and securing 10 x Platinum certification in Australia and Platinum in the USA and UK for their 2003 debut album Get Born. The album produced a string of classic singles in ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, ‘Rollover DJ’, and ‘Look What You’ve Done’ and netted the band 6 ARIA awards in 2004. Jet’s follow up album “Shine On” followed in 2006 and achieved platinum status in Australia on the back of stand-out headline shows around the world and an unforgettable Big Day Out run in 2007. Jet played their last show in 2010 and now back for Handpicked 2017!

San Cisco’s storm came in much like a front approaching the port in their home town of Fremantle; swift and eerily beautiful. Initially whipped up in the wake of high school graduation, the foursome of Jordi, Josh, Scarlett, & Nick soon found themselves unwittingly defining hipster culture. Fast forward to 2015 where their sophomore album Gracetown debuted at #2 on the ARIA charts, announced #10 of Triple J’s Top Ten Albums of 2015 and song, “RUN” earnt the #33 spot of triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2014! Extensive touring to eager audiences around the world took up the majority of 2015 and early 2016, playing festivals at home and headline tours from Maitland to Mexico. Earlier this year it was time to unleash the third sophomore album, The Water onto the world!

Australian quartet the Jezabels shimmer with their anthemic, empowering approach to indie pop. The group formed in 2007 after meeting at the University of Sydney with their first musical offering coming in the form of an EP trilogy, beginning with 2009’s ‘The Man Is Dead’. Propelled by a surprising combination of pop hooks and epic, moody energy, The Man Is Dead landed on the CMJ Top 200 chart in summer 2009, the first of many accolades for the band: by 2010, the song “Hurt Me” was featured as song of the week in Australia and international band Tegan and Sara tapped the quartet to open for them on their spring tour down under. The band has played the main-stage set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. In 2014, the Jezabels returned with ‘Brink’, which earned enthusiastic reviews and rose to number two on the Australian album charts and most recently, the band’s third full-length album, Synthia was released in Feb 2016.
After extensive touring, playing alongside acts such as Andy Bull, The Jungle Giants, New Empire and Miami Horror, local vintage pop sensation LEO will get the mosh pit moving at the Handpicked Festival. The four-some who rose to fame after winning a Nova 91.9 competition to play alongside The Veronicas, have gone on to release hits Beautiful Mess, Veins and All We Need. Heavily influenced by their love for Vintage Pop, RnB and the visual culture they are surrounded by. LEO is a natural bi-product of every resource they have. Members Tom Montesi, Ilia Martini, Jae Curtis & Matt Schirripa bring a relevant sound to the music they grew up on.
JIMMY & THE MIRRORS
Remember that time that music made you feel happy? You know, before you got tied down by emo-punk and diluted hip-hop? Remember that time when there were cute girls at the bar in floral dresses, drinking rainbow-shaded cocktails whilst dancing to a soundtrack of optimism and bliss? Jimmy & the Mirrors remembers that. Infamous for throwing “Flower Parties,” and touring across the nation with tons of face paint – Jimmy & The Mirrors have firmly established themselves as Adelaide’s premier party band. Comprising of bassist Jimmy Meegan, guitarists Banjo Weatherald and Nic Bastiras, drummer Kaurna Cronin, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Dom Symes and trumpet player Ben Zubreckyj; Jimmy & The Mirrors are like an Adelaide super group indie-pop version of Mamma Mia, in the best possible way. In addition to sharing stages with everyone from Flume and Art Vs Science through to Jonathan Boulet and Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Raquettes, Jimmy & The Mirrors have spent much of the last couple of years on the road playing everywhere from the streets of Berlin to deserted streets of whereveryoudontwannabe.
THE WINTER GYPSY
The Winter Gypsy are a six-piece indie folk group from SA. Forming as a collusion of four separate bands in August, 2015, the band ranges from soft folk melodies and haunting vocal harmonies to soaring, upbeat instrumentals. The band has a complex dichotomy of both ambient and driving, distorted solos. Drawing comparisons to The Middle East, Bon Iver, and Bombay Bicycle Club, their sound is complemented by an intense and intricate range of instruments.
Great singers aren’t hard to find – it’s the interesting ones that really count. Small wonder that, among a bevy of softly cooed ballads and delicately bared souls, Alana Jagt’s dynamic Joplin-via-Joni voice has so thoroughly captivated the South Australian music scene. A soaring, old soul voice that is at once captivating and distinctive, Alana engages her audience with haunting melody lines and heartfelt performance.
